October 30, I’ve been a member of this forum for a little while but have created this “secret-name” in an attempt to remain even more anonymous about this particularly sensitive subject. I’m dating a former undergrad professor. I spent my last semester and part of the summer working in his lab to gain experience for my grad applications. We started dating in July two months after my graduation – nothing happened before then, not even discussion of dating and plan to continue dating while I am in grad school. We have tried to keep the relationship as covert as possible and very few people from my undergrad institute know about it. That said, we are both reluctant to lie about it and eventually plan to be a little more open. I will probably move to a new, but nearby town for grad school.

How big was the conference, and has she already proposed a dissertation that does not overlap with your expertise? Further, depending on HOW you met e. I am a fan of Stanford’s recent policy on this. They created an infographic, available here: Basically, NEVER date undergrads, and teachers shouldn’t date any student “when a teacher has had -or might be expected ever to have-academic responsibility over the other party.
With what you know now, how much does your field fall within all the possible things she might think of studying? Grad school is broad, after all If you study social psychology and she studies sociology of groups, say, you might have too much overlap to ethically date: That said, it would be problematic on the other hand if you two developed an academic relationship with an unrevealed desire for a romantic relationship still lurking.
Also consider what would happen if you dated but broke up acrimoniously. You would have to recuse yourself from judging things she was part of, but what would happen if her advisor recommended she take a class in your field of expertise?

With the new policy, which takes effect immediately, the university joins a growing number of American higher educational institutions that have restricted such relationships, saying they may exploit students. Binion, who helped draft the policy, said that while she believes most faculty members already recognize such standards of behavior, it was important for the university to take a clear stand. Until now, UC — like many U. But six campuses, including Berkeley, have conflict-of-interest guidelines urging professors to recuse themselves from overseeing students with whom they are romantically involved.
The regents approved the policy on a voice vote, with two of them — Regent Velma Montoya and student Regent Matt Murray — asking that their opposition be registered. They and other critics said the policy was too broad and would be difficult to enforce. The potential problems stemming from sexual relations between professors and students were highlighted at the university last fall when the dean of the Boalt Hall law school announced his resignation after an allegation of sexual harassment by a former law student.

A revised version was posted on the Northwestern University web site in The Northwestern version served as the first draft for this document. Purpose Everyone has a different view of the ideal advising relationships and good advising relationship take many different forms. There is widespread agreement, however, that certain responsibilities and rewards are an inherent part of any mentoring relationship between student and faculty member.
The purpose of this document is to describe the basic expectations that should hold for advising relationships. It will recommend ways of insuring that these expectations are met and that relationships are maximally beneficial to both parties. The goal is to increase awareness of the factors that produce a valuable partnership in the pursuit of scientific knowledge.
The advising relationship will ideally foster students’ confidence, skills, and grounding in theory. This relationship should be the student’s doorway to participation in the profession of psychology. In most cases, students and faculty will both feel that the relationship is productive and rewarding. However, if a student is not making good progress toward a degree or is not engaging in requisite presentation and publication activities, this may indicate a problem in the advising relationship.
Students who feel the necessary support is missing from their advising relationship are encouraged to communicate their needs, discuss possible remedies, or perhaps find a new advisor. It is important that students are able to recognize unsatisfactory situations early on, and handle them appropriately. It is ultimately the student’s choice and responsibility to terminate an unsatisfactory relationship.

It is an excellent question, especially at the start of the conference and job season. O, you graduate students! What am I going to do with you? How am I going to explain to you all of the ways that you sabotage and undermine yourselves, with the best of intentions, and with complete lack of self-awareness? So I will do what I can. I will list the ways that grad students act like grad students.
I will name the behavior, describe it, and then explain how and why that behavior sabotages you in a job market situation. You drone on and on about your dissertation.
